This Southern Style Sweet Potato Casserole combines creamy mashed sweet potatoes with a crunchy pecan and brown sugar topping, making it the perfect comforting side dish for any holiday meal.

  • 4 large sweet potatoes, peeled and cubed
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/3 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1/2 cup evaporated milk
  • 2 large eggs, beaten
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1/3 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup chopped pecans
  • 1/3 cup unsalted butter, softened (for topping)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  2. Boil the peeled and cubed sweet potatoes in a large pot of water until tender, about 15 minutes. Drain well.
  3. Mash the sweet potatoes in a large bowl until smooth.
  4. Add granulated sugar, melted butter, evaporated milk, beaten eggs, vanilla extract, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Mix until fully combined.
  5. Pour the sweet potato mixture into the prepared baking dish and spread evenly.
  6. In a separate bowl, combine brown sugar, flour, chopped pecans, and softened butter until crumbly.
  7. Sprinkle the pecan topping evenly over the sweet potato mixture.
  8. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes or until the topping is golden brown and the casserole is heated through.
  9. Remove from oven and let it cool slightly before serving.
